The Medicine
Horse Project
is an
equine-assisted psychotherapeutic program that
promotes emotional growth and behavioral
change. It
is for
youth-at-risk and teens with emotional
disturbances.
Developing patience, trust and self
confidence in relationship to the horses and
being able to transfer these qualities to
daily life is the therapeutic goal of this
program.
It is the philosophy of
Medicine Horse that learning
to work effectively and safely with a one
thousand pound animal requires patience,
trust, compassion, mindfulness, awareness,
and self confidence. Horses do not
lie, and through their body language,
they mirror what is going on with
the participants, which breaks down defense
systems quickly. Through
this work, the horses become metaphors for
life, attitudes and behaviors. Mustangs
as well as other rescued, abused and
malnourished horses provide their equine
assistance to the Medicine Horse Project.
